An Aer Lingus flight which departed from Dublin has been forced to make an urgent diversion following a bomb threat.

The Rome-bound passenger jet was diverted to the Evreux air base in France after a mid-air emergency was declared.

The French Prime Minister’s office confirmed it was closely monitoring the situation as the aircraft made its unscheduled landing.

The Airbus A320 was scheduled to land in Rome at 10.35am after leaving Dublin Airport at 6.24am.

However, the flight was notified of a bomb threat on board at 7.56am by air traffic control.

On social media, Flightradar24 said no plans have taken off from Rome Fiumicino Airport in the past 30 minutes.

The live air traffic tracking service confirmed the flight landed at Evreux air base in Normandy at 10.04am local time.
