As we mark Remembrance across the country this week, GB News has been finding out the stories of veterans from across the UK. This series continues today with the story of Neil Fellingham.
“My name is Neil Ellingham. I served in the Royal Air Force. I was a weapons technician. I was medically discharged. I was able to deploy out to the Falkland Islands in 2017, working on missile launchers, stationed armouries, as well as explosive storage areas. I had returned from deployment to the Falklands, um, about six months prior.
“I was back in the explosive storage area, duty crew for the weekend, and I had got the phone call to go back to work. And unfortunately, at that time, I was then involved in a road traffic accident where I was crushed between two cars, fractured my tibia quite high up my towards my knee.
“But unbeknownst at the time, it had also crushed multiple nerves. It pushed our family to an incredibly dark place, and I speak not only for myself, but for my wife as well.
“The support that I was very fortunate to receive from my chain of command sergeants, corporals, chief techs, my warrant officer, to be honest, my flight attendant as well at the time.
“At the moment my injury occurred, those guys literally dropped everything to help and support not only myself, but my wife, and allowed us really to process what was actually happening.
“The support from the Royal British Legion has allowed so many other wounded, injured and sick, both veterans and serving alike like myself, to be able to come here, to be able to not have to worry about the struggles that we have, to know that we can still do amazing things.
“And it’s incredibly honouring to think back. I am always fortunate enough to think back and reflect upon my friends, everyone that I met whilst I was serving. I’m grateful to have met.
“It’s important to take a moment as well to recognise those that have served before us, whether it be through National Service, those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.
“And this is what the Poppy appeal and armistice time reminds me of: coming together as a community again, that camaraderie that some of us veterans yearn for, it is there.”
