A suspected unexploded device has been discovered in the water at a dockyard near Falmouth, Cornwall.
Emergency services remain at the scene, with two nearby homes evacuated as a precaution.
Members of the public have been urged to stay away from the area, while a 150-metre safety cordon has been put in place across both land and sea.
The Coastguard is also advising boat users to avoid the area while specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers assess the device.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the object was discovered earlier today within the dock area.
Officers are working alongside the Fire Service, Port Authority and Harbour Master as enquiries continue.
A police spokesman said: “Emergency services are responding following the discovery of a suspected unexploded ordnance device in water near Falmouth Docks.
“The item was located earlier today within the dock area and specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers have been contacted and are en-route to assess the device.
“A 150-metre safety cordon has been established around the location, which takes in land and sea, while enquiries and assessment work are carried out. Two homes have also been evacuated.
“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area and follow the advice of emergency services and port officials. The Coastguard are also asking boat users to stay away from the area.”
Police said there is currently no indication of a wider risk beyond the cordoned area, but warned the public not to approach the site or enter any restricted zones.
The force added that enquiries remain ongoing and further updates will be provided when appropriate.
A Royal Navy spokesman said: “Royal Navy Bomb disposal experts, Bravo Squadron of the Diving and Threat Exploitation Group, based at HMNB Devonport, are currently assisting Devon and Cornwall Police in the assessment of suspected unexploded ordnance found at Falmouth Docks.”
Two roads in Falmouth were closed off by police, including Pendennis Rise and Castle Hill taped off, near to Falmouth Docks Train Station.
Local media reports indicate the device to be a World War Two bomb, with police waiting for a decision from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
At The Falmouth Hotel, staff have been providing refreshments to police officers working at the cordon.
