Andy Burnham has been branded a “con man” by Esther McVey after opening to door to Britain rejoining the European Union.

Speaking to GB News, the Conservative MP argued that the Prime Minister is the “master of fake authenticity” after previously vowing not to revisit the Brexit debate.

However, on Tuesday, Mr Burnham told the People’s Channel that he will “look at all options” when it comes to Britain’s future with the European Union.

He said: “George Osborne’s put an option forward, Canada have talked about a different relationship with the European Union. I can’t leave Britain out of those discussions.

“We do have to have an honest and grown-up conversation about well, what could a future relationship look like? And then come back to the public and say, well, here are the broad options, and here are the issues involved with each of them.

“That’s just the right way to lead. I’ve got to do what’s best for this country.”

Reacting to Mr Burnham’s stance on Brexit, Ms McVey told GB News he is attempting a “complete rewrite of history”.

She said: “It was Stalin-esque, a complete rewriting of history. Andy Burnham had gone on the campaign trail because he wanted to win the seat in Makerfield, which was a Brexit-leaning state, saying he wouldn’t revisit this.

“And now that he’s won the seat, he is coming true to himself that he wants to go back in the EU.”

The Tory MP likened the Prime Minister to a “con man” over his sudden change of stance on Brexit.

Ms McVey told GB News: “I call him the master of fake authenticity. He says whatever he needs to say, whenever he needs to say it, and we’re getting this now.

“He’s like a con man, and most con men seem plausible for the time being.”

She warned that a general election could take place “even earlier” than the proposed 2029 timeline.

Ms McVey said: “I can see why Farage is out on that general election campaign trail, the man said it won’t happen until 2029.

“I’m afraid it could happen earlier, because I think John Healey as Chancellor has not got the money that he needs in the Treasury, and I think it’s a race between them going to the general election and the IMF coming into the UK with a bailout.”

The Conservative MP argued that if Brexit was such a major issue for the UK, the country “wouldn’t be growing faster than France, Germany and Italy since that EU referendum”.

Ms McVey made clear: “The reality is if Brexit were the issue for the UK’s woes now, we wouldn’t be growing faster than France, Germany and Italy since that EU referendum.

“These Remainers need to be looking at what the Labour Party has done since it came into Government, and that is tax, tax, tax the public, pushing those tax bills, crucifying business.

Taking aim at Labour policy further, the Tory MP stressed that there is “so much more” that the UK can get out of Brexit.

She said: “We’ve got 40 trade deals around the world with 100 different countries, and the biggest laugh is that Andy Burnham goes on and on and on about how he’s going to give everybody a VAT reduction on energy bills.

“Please, let’s remind Andy Burnham that wouldn’t be possible if we hadn’t have gone through Brexit and come out, and I’m afraid the man speaks with forked tongue on pretty much everything.”

She concluded: “The triple lock, they shouldn’t be getting rid of it, and it certainly won’t pay for his social care bill, which also had to be corrected.

“It wasn’t a good enough national service and won’t be covering residential costs. Trust me, if you shook hands with Andy Burnham, you’d have to check you still had four fingers and a thumb left.”
