The Pope’s ailment was first spotted during a recent check-up, prompting follow-up treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for the removal of the small nodule.
Pre-operative tests suggested the cancer was likely, but the operation confirmed the diagnosis.
A statement from the Vatican said tests conducted this morning confirmed the Pope was ready for discharge.
“In light of the blood tests and the chest X-ray performed this morning, and following an assessment of his clinical status, the Holy Father has been deemed fit for discharge,” his doctors, Dr Luigi Carbone and Prof Stefano Margaritora, said.
