He later told ABC: “This wasn’t an accident, and the suspect is in custody.”

Angus Taylor, leader of the Opposition, described the attack as a “shocking day for our nation,” adding: “No one should be targeted in this way.”

He said Australians will be “angry and appalled”, declaring: “Our nation cannot become a place where violent attacks are normalised.”

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke noted the increase in harrassments and violent threats against those in high office over the past year, with reported incidents rising from 951 to 1067.

However, he insisted the investigation was still in its “very early stages”.

The family of Dr Haines released a statement this morning to confirm the attack.

“This afternoon, our beloved Helen was involved in an incident outside her Wangaratta Electorate Office, and is receiving medical care,” the statement read.

“We thank the swift assistance of bystanders and the dedicated health workers who assisted her, and police for their response.

“Our family, and Helen’s staff, will be making no further comment at this time, and ask that their privacy be respected by the public and media.

“Please keep Helen in your thoughts.”

The MP was elected for the Victorian seat of Indi in the 2019 election.
