Emmanuel Macron has declined his Interior Minister’s offer to resign after widespread rioting continued across France.
President Macron said Laurent Nunez should stay on, given the need to maintain a chain of command within the police and security forces.
The French President also asked Mr Nunez to set up new approaches as quickly as possible to deal with looters, the Elysee said.
Fresh clashes broke out in Paris and Marseille, where riot police intervened to prevent attempts to ransack businesses.
