In today’s GB News Daily Reflection, we recognise that, spiritually speaking, we come to God with empty hands.

“Someone once gave me this book Speeches that Changed the World. It contains speeches by Churchill, Mandela and Abraham Lincoln.

“But surely the most famous speech ever given which is included in this book begins like this. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“It is, of course, the beginning of Jesus Sermon on the Mount, the most famous, and, I believe, the greatest speech ever given. Maybe you’ve heard that opening line before, but it was a very surprising, attention grabbing way for Jesus to begin a sermon.

“He doesn’t say blessed are the spiritually impressive or the morally upright. He says, blessed are the poor in spirit, and being poor in spirit doesn’t mean having low self-esteem.

“We don’t have an impressive moral record to show him. We’re not as loving, honest, or good as we’d like other people to believe or as God made us to be.

“That may not sound like a blessed condition, but Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven belongs to precisely these people. He’s teaching that heaven isn’t a reward for the outwardly good. It’s a gift for the inwardly humble. Those who know they need forgiveness. The speeches in this book may have changed the course of history.

“But Jesus’s speech has the power to change my eternity because he offers me something no other speaker can. The kingdom of heaven as a gift if I’ll come to him with empty hands. There are many speeches in this book that I admire, but this is the one that I need.”
