In today’s GB News Daily Reflection, we explore one of the parables of Jesus.

“In this story, a king prepares a wedding banquet for his son, and all the honoured guests are invited. Except none of them come.

“In fact, not only do they ignore the invitation, they cold blooded kill the messengers sent to deliver it. Now that really is rude. The king is enraged, but he will not cancel the party.

“Instead, he sends word out into the highways and byways, the streets and the lanes to invite anyone and everyone to come on in. It’s a shocking story, and the truth behind it is perhaps more offensive still.

“God’s invitation is wide and generous, but like all invitations, it’s perfectly possible to decline. God is not in the business of twisting people’s arms. The choice is free.

“In Jesus story, it’s the religiously entitled of his day that shunned the invitation, even though they had first preference. No matter. There are others who will come, including those who would not consider themselves worthy of such an invitation.

“So what’s the point here? Simply, this God’s invitation is not based on merit. There’s no entitlement in God’s kingdom. The invitation is a free gift available to all.

“Whether you accept it, well, that’s down to you.”
