Trump was an FBI informant on Epstein, apparently. Really?

Donald Trump had a long and well-documented history with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. As such, it was always strange that Trump’s supporters thought he would be the one to expose all the wealthy men who hung out on Epstein’s island. As we reported, this came to a head this year when Trump backtracked and began referring to the scandal as a ‘Democrat hoax’. While the pressure eased off over the Summer break, things are once again heating up, with politicians from both sides of the House pushing for the release of more files. Not satisfied with how badly the ‘Democrat hoax’ line went down, a senior Republicans has – and we swear this is real – made the claim that Trump wasn’t hanging out with Epstein because the two men shared in an interest in under age girls, but because he was – and we swear again we’re not making this up – an FBI informant.

Undercover Donald: was Trump an FBI informant on Epstein?

Mike Johnson is the Republican House Speaker. When questioned about Trump’s claim that the Epstein scandal is a ‘Democrat hoax’, Johnson responded:

What Trump is referring to is the hoax that the Democrats are using to try to attack him

He also said:

It’s been misrepresented. He’s not saying that what Epstein did is a hoax. It’s a terrible, unspeakable evil; he believes that himself. When he first heard the rumour, he kicked him out of Mar-a-Lago

Remember “when he first heard the rumour”, because we’ll circle back to that. For now, the important part is that Johnson claimed:

He was an FBI informant to try to take this stuff down. The president knows ― and has great sympathy for the women who suffered these unspeakable harms. It’s detestable to him.

Trump claimed to have been friends with Epstein for 15 years in 2002, with the pair cutting ties in 2004. If Trump cut ties with Epstein ‘when he first heard the rumour’, how could he have been an informant before that? Are we supposed to believe the FBI asked him to snitch on Epstein with no idea as to what he should be snitching on?

Untangling this further, the idea that Trump was an uninformed informant falls down immediately, because Johnson said Trump was trying “to take this stuff down”. Take what stuff down? The stuff you just told us he had no idea about?

Make it make sense!

As you’d expect, many have expressed disbelief in the latest claims:

Those who are confused include members of the Trump administration:

As people have pointed out, if Trump was indeed gathering evidence on Epstein, the presumption would be that he did so in the same way that mafia informants make themselves useful – by participating in the crimes:

Some have also noted that this latest claim only strengthens the call to release the files:

Spy games

If it’s revealed that Trump was actually an FBI informant, he wasn’t just any FBI informant; he was the worst FBI informant of all time. The case which led to the conviction of Epstein began in 2005, and while the FBI were involved, they were involved at the request of local police. If Trump was an informant for 14 years and that didn’t produce enough evidence to generate a case, you’d have to assume one of two things:

  • Trump didn’t witness any crimes, in which case he was really just hanging around with a guy the FBI told him was a creep for no good reason.
  • Trump did witness crimes but failed to report them, somehow managing to string the FBI on for several years despite not giving them anything useful.

While there are any number of scenarios which could be the case, the only one which rings true is that ‘Trump was never an FBI informant’. If future releases prove otherwise, we’ll be sure to update you on this increasingly muddled situation.
