Doctors took part in a British Medical Association ballot earlier this year, which ruled in favour of the strike.
Although turnout was just over the 50 per cent threshold needed for the ballot, some 76 per cent of consultants voted in favour of the walkout.
In a joint statement, BMA consultants committee co-chairs Dr Helen Neary and Dr Shanu Datta, said despite negotiations with the Government in “good faith”, ministers have “kicked the can down the road”.
They said: “As the most senior and skilled doctors in the NHS, consultants not only provide frontline, life-saving care, but they are central to running and designing services, training and supervising the future workforce, and ensuring patients get the best treatment possible.
