Scottish man, 82, among 16 killed in Lisbon funicular crash

David Young, 82, from Holyhead on Anglesey, was named as the third British citizen who died last Wednesday when the Gloria funicular derailed and crashed into a building in Portugal’s capital.

Although he has lived in Holyhead since 1980, where he worked as a customs officer, Young was originally from Auchterarder in Perthshire.

His family described him as a “lifelong transport enthusiast”, saying it was a comfort that “his final moments were in pursuit of the hobby which gave him so much happiness”.

“In retirement he enjoyed visiting heritage railways and tramways around the world,” his family said.

The two other British victims were named over the weekend as Kayleigh Smith, 36, and her partner Will Nelson, 44.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “deeply saddened by the incident”.

A spokesperson said: “His thoughts are with their families and those affected by this terrible incident.

“We stand united with Portugal during this difficult time.”

Lisbon’s funicular railways – Gloria, Lavra, Bica and Graca – are a popular tourist attraction, known for their yellow tram-like vehicles.

Funiculars are a type of railway system that transport people up and down steep slopes.

The Gloria funicular, which is 140 years old, was packed with passengers when it came off the rails.

Officials said a cable along the railway’s route snapped, but the rest of the mechanism was functioning properly.

The brakeman tried to apply emergency brakes but failed to prevent the derailment, which resulted in one of the carriages crashing into a building at a bend in a road.

Also among the dead were five Portuguese nationals, two Canadians, two South Koreans, one American, one French, one Swiss and one Ukrainian.

A further 21 people were injured in the incident, including five who were seriously injured.
