A lollipop man in his 70s has been struck by a car at a pedestrian crossing directly outside a school.
The crossing patrol officer was hit outside the Holy Family Catholic primary school in Sale Moor on Wednesday afternoon.
The collision left him with a suspected fractured leg.
It occurred as pupils and their parents left the school at the end of the day, and witnesses described being shocked by what they saw.
The lollipop man was transported to hospital.
He is understood to be recovering from his injuries.
The incident happened on New Hall Road, a well-trafficked route situated between the M60 motorway and Sale Moor village.
Officers detained a 45-year-old man in connection with the incident, arresting him on suspicion of both dangerous driving and drug driving.

Holy Family Catholic Primary School is believed to have emailed parents after the crash.
It is said to have reassured them that the lollipop man is recovering in hospital.
New Hall Road serves as a busy thoroughfare linking the M60 to Sale Moor village, with the school situated alongside it.
The collision occurred at the pedestrian crossing just outside the school gates during one of the road’s busiest periods, as families made their way home at the close of the school day.

Greater Manchester Police released a statement after the incident.
It read: “We were called shortly before 4pm on Wednesday 16 September to reports of a road traffic collision on Old Hall Road, Sale, involving two cars and a pedestrian.
“Officers attended and a man in his 70s was taken to hospital with serious injuries.”
“A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drug driving.

They added: “He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.”
A spokesman for Trafford Council said: “This was a very upsetting incident and we are offering support to the school crossing patrolman who was injured, as well as to the school community.
“We are also supporting police with their investigation.”
