Keir Starmer to meet Isaac Herzog, Downing Street confirms

It comes as an arrest warrant has been sought for Herzog ahead of his visit to the UK.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “The Prime Minister will be meeting the Israeli president, where he’ll raise the intolerable situation in Gaza, the action Israel must take to end the horrific suffering we’re witnessing.

“It cannot go on any longer.”

Herzog is expected to arrive in London on Wednesday, and will meet with Starmer and other politicians during his visit.

Number 10 said that the meeting will go ahead following Israel’s strike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar.

The spokesman said Starmer shares “revulsion” at the suffering in Gaza, but stopped short of repeating Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s calls for Herzog to answer for alleged war crimes and ethnic cleansing.

Earlier on Tuesday, Streeting had said Herzog needs to explain how he believes the Israeli government can achieve its aim in Gaza “without genocide”.

Asked whether Starmer would use Streeting’s language in his meeting with the Israeli president, the official said: “The Prime Minister has spoken previously of the revulsion that he and members of the public feel when they see the scenes on our television screens of children, women, people suffering in Gaza, and that intolerable situation on the ground.

The Prime Minister would “raise the situation with President Herzog tomorrow as part of our ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring the suffering to an end and bring about the peace that both Israelis and Palestinians want to see,” the spokesman added.

It comes as the UK Government ruled that Israel is not committing genocide in Gaza – contradicting a mounting body of international experts who say otherwise.

Israel’s genocide in Gaza, which has so far killed more than 64,500 people.

At least 35 people in Gaza, including seven aid seekers, have been killed by Israeli forces since dawn on Tuesday.

We told how pro-Palestine campaign group Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA) has now instructed a legal team to apply for an arrest warrant to be issued for Herzog on “charges of aiding, abetting or procuring direct and indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian objects”.

Herzog’s visit will be the first time a senior Israeli leader has been in Britain since former foreign secretary David Lammy secretly met his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar in the spring.

It will also take place just weeks before the UK is expected to recognise the state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly.
