In today’s reflection, we consider how Jesus’ teachings can guide us in these politically fractious times.
The gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke tell of the Pharisees and the Herodians asking Jesus, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Ceaser or not?”
If Jesus said “yes,” he would be seen as a collaborator with the oppressive regime. If he said no, he’s a rebel against the empire”.
In response, Jesus asked for a Roman coin (a denarius), pointed out the image and inscription of Caesar, and replied: “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s”.
Despite often difficult and divisive times, it is “ultimate allegiance to the God who stands above it all.”
