In today’s GB News Daily Reflection, we remember that Christianity is not a repayment plan, it is the announcement of a debt canceled by mercy.
“In one of Jesus’s parables, a servant owes a king an unimaginably large debt. Faced with ruin, he falls to his knees and says, give me time and I will pay back everything. It sounds hopeful. Maybe he’ll cobble the money together. But the promise is hopeless. The debt is simply too great for anyone to pay.
“Many of us approach God in much the same way. Give me another chance, God. We think, and I’ll do better. I’ll make up for the past and become the kind of person that you can finally accept.
“But here’s the thing, the King in Jesus story does not offer a longer payment schedule. He cancels the debt.
“Jesus here is giving us an insight into God’s incredible grace. God’s forgiveness is not earned by a convincing promise to improve. In Christ, the debt we could never clear is paid for us at the cross, and all he invites us to do is to receive him.
“Now, of course, that forgiveness changes us. God’s grace teaches us to change and to become more merciful ourselves. But change. Living follows forgiveness. It does not purchase it.”
