Speaking to the People’s Channel ahead of Remembrance Sunday, Mr Carns urged the now-Chancellor and current Prime Minister Andy Burnham to invest in Britain’s security amid rising geopolitical threats after the Government refused to commit to spending three per cent of GDP on defence spending by 2030.
He added: “It would be very foolish to underestimate what Britain can do when it needs to do it. Some of the most resilient countries in the world are those countries where the population is not reliant on the state for everything. The longer you leave it, the steeper the climb.”
Meanwhile, there are growing fears Downing Street’s proposed Troubles bill could leave former servicemen facing renewed investigations into incidents dating back decades.
Mr Carns told Britain’s News Channel: “I’ve always said that the risk of prosecutions for veterans is really, really small, but the process has become the punishment. Our military is not above the law… when things are done that break the law, then we should be held accountable. But we mustn’t allow the process to become the punishment.”
