He discussed the issue as the Oxfordshire town of Piddington declared its independence from the United Kingdom after a landslide referendum, protesting plans to house more than a thousand asylum seekers near the community.
“The real issue is we don’t want many, many thousands of unknown, often dangerous men scattered around our country. No one does,” Mr Shipley began.
He also accused the political class of being “not conceptually capable” of solving the problem, arguing that anti-immigration protests were a “natural outcome” of declining confidence in the state.
“I do think part of why the state is getting so worried about these big anti-immigration protests is because they symbolise its collapse of legitimacy,” he said.
“The state remains legitimate to the extent that it uses its legitimate power of force to protect its people. It’s not doing that.”
